AniBlogging Crossover Special: Two Different Views on Honey and Clover
Posted by: ninja-assasin69 - Nov-21-2009 10:31 PM - No Replies

vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h00m34s77

ExecutiveOtaku’s Intro: Honey and Clover is a series that has been written about fairly extensively in the anime blogging community. It’s also a favorite of many. So when, as a brand new blogger, I found out that Scamp from Bokutachi no Blog was currently working his way through the series, I proposed that once he was done that we make a post comparing how two different people viewed the series. Having just recently finished it, he and I ended up having fairly different opinions on it. From my viewpoint as a huge fan of Honey and Clover, and he as someone more mixed in his opinion, we have collaborated to bring you this post displaying and contrasting our opinions on such a widely well regarded show. While the series ended three years ago now, I feel that it is rich enough to be worth a (semi) retro-editorial especially given our different opinions on it. I’ve also just always wanted to write more about it despite joining the blogging community a few years late, heh. We both hope you’ll enjoy this inter-blog, international collaboration between Scamp and myself and our differing opinions. We also invite your own comments and opinions in the comments section whether they agree with one of us, with neither of us, or with both of us (somehow…Wink.

Just a word: it should go without saying that this will contain some amount of spoilers.

Overall impressions

Scamp: If FLCL is the perfect anime at portraying the transition from childhood to adolescence then Honey and Clover is the perfect anime for the transition from adolescence through to adulthood. At least, the first season is anyway. There is a phenomenon in any great slice-of-life anime I like to call the Azumanga Effect. This is where the characters, while not necessarily doing anything different, gradually grow on you to the point that you just love watching them together no matter what they’re doing. OK, this isn’t exactly restricted to the slice-of-life genre but it’s by this effect that these shows live or die by. In an ideal situation the characters should gradually grow on you until right at the end of the series where you actually feel pretty darn emotional just at the thought of saying goodbye to the characters, as if they were your personal friends and you’ve lived through those times with them. The best anime examples I can think of are BECK and, of course, Azumanga. This is what Honey and Clover should have achieved and was certainly heading in that direction. The insanely accurate depiction of college life, the slow maturing process of each character like a good cheese and the friendship between those bunch grew on me gradually, culminating with Takemoto’s return from his bike journey at the end of the first season. And yet the series didn’t quite feel complete just yet. There wasn’t that sense of closure that could’ve left the first season work as a stand-alone series. Several plot points had yet to be solved but most of all it hadn’t quite reached the uber-Azumanga Effect finishing levels just yet. That is what the second season should have done. But instead it abandoned all that for some fucking dorama. Hagu was turned into a just another Key adaptation esque pity moeblob. The resolution of Morita’s story was painfully anti-climactic. The second season killed the fun, killed what made me love Honey and Clover in the first place and, even though it’s been about 2 weeks since I finished it, I am still bloody pissed off about that entire season.
.
ExecutiveOtaku: “It’s so real!” was the exclamation of a friend of mine as she watched Honey and Clover with me, more precisely during the sequence in episode 07 when the song ‘Tamagawa’ plays. And this, in one sudden outburst, is exactly why I love the show. Honey and Clover is easily my favorite anime for its amazing combination of genuine emotion, characters you can identify with, its realistic approach to growing up, excellent visuals, and skillful use of insert music.  That’s quite a lot of praise, but it’s hard for me to overstate exactly how much I love the show and how watching it (three or four times now) has impacted me. There are so many anime series that cover some of the same themes but are set in high school. While I know that this fits into the long standing (though currently changing) Japanese social concept that compulsory schooling is for fun and growth and that everything afterwards is srsfknbsns, it’s rather hard to believe that high school is the place that these themes play out to resolution. It has been my observation that the time when people really develop and figure out who they are is during the years immediately after high school. And in Honey and Clover it’s all there: the search for who you are and what drives you, the ‘student poverty’ that somehow creates great memories, that transitional phase into adulthood, loves lasting, one-sided, and short, and what to do with yourself after you graduate.

The growth and experiences of the characters as they go through this time in their lives is so well done that someone who is also at that point in their life can identify with all of the characters at different moments. Sometimes Takemoto’s feeling of emptiness is something you experience, other times you’re in Yamada’s shoes, or at a particular moment you might feel more like Mayama trying to pursue your dreams but still confused or clumsy in doing so. Maybe you know a Morita (or are one), or are under pressure like Hagu, or stuck between trying to be cool and trying to be genuine as Nomiya was. At different times you are, or you know people who are, all of these characters. And even with so much else to love about this series, this ability to identify with the genuine emotions being conveyed through the screen is the true strength of the series.

-Favorite character(s)
vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h11m08s20

Scamp: Tough choice. It’s between Morita and Takemoto. While Takemoto might not have been the most interesting character in the world to watch, it was his story and development that really hooked me. That returns back to what I love about the series. The portrayal of growth through adolescence and nobody showed that better than Takemoto. I hate to say that he was a character that was easy to relate to (OMG, I’m also a generic high school boy who has troubles getting girlfriends just like that guy in *insert whatever here*) but that’s exactly what I’m going to say. Morita, on the other hand, is a complete and utter nutter. What he lacks in terms of his story and development he makes up for with his sheer energy. The moment that will always stick in my mind with Morita is, after disappearing for several months, randomly showing up on TV to accept the award for the movie he worked on and to equally randomly show up in the bed beside them. It wasn’t until he returned after several episodes absence did I realise how much an effect he had on the show. Everything turns funnier when you added Morita. Ideally if you were to mix Takemoto and Morita together you would have the ultimate anime character.
.
ExecutiveOtaku: Mayama. I know many fans of Honey and Clover tend to focus on Takemoto due to his epic journey of self-discovery, but I’ve always liked and identified more with Mayama. Mayama’s experiences were more about trying to find a way forward towards the future and what he wanted out of it, whereas Takemoto first had to find out who he was. This was more relatable to me, since I was never really unsure of who I am but have had lots of moments where I wonder about the future and how I’m going to make my place in it. The love triangle between Mayama, Rika, and Yamada was also my favorite part of the drama in the series, and it was really touching and heartfelt no matter which character’s angle it was presented from. Full disclosure: I was a Mayama/Rika fan right from the start.
.
In the end it was Mayama’s attempts and progression towards maturity that made me like the character, respect him even with his faults, and to sort of look up to him in a way. He would try to act like the cool upperclassman to Takemoto and others, but in the next moment make an anime or kid’s show reference or getting embarassed after making a mature sounding comment (for instance, the Galaxy Express 999 reference he couldn’t help making, but was obviously somewhat embarrassed to, when everyone broke into Morita’s room.) He grew up into an adult, but moments like this just show that he’s still young at heart. His determination in the face of a difficult and complicated situation in regards to both Rika and not wanting to hurt Yamada was admirable and relatable. As I head into the last year of grad school I often recall his journey and hope that I can pursue my goals with the same stumbling yet resolute steps forward.
.
-Favorite moment(s)
vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h04m34s169

Scamp: Easy choice. Takemoto’s bike trek across Japan. Throughout the first season they kept making references to Takemoto getting on his bike and just seeing how far he could go and I never quite got where they were heading with that analogy. But it clicked in those episodes exactly what the purpose of Honey and Clover was and what the anime was aiming to portray. Heck, you could write pages and pages of analysis into, as EO puts it, ‘Musings on Takemoto’s Bicycle Journey Analyzed in a post-Marxist Context or Something Equally Pretentious’, but there are people  far better at writing analyital content and love the show more than I do who are far more qualified to compose something like that. I’m sure a quick search Mono no Aware, Ha Neul Seom, Kritik der Animationskraft or similar styled blogs that usually put me asleep will conjure something on Honey and Clover. I’m going to compare it to the feeling I got after finishing Forest Gump. As soon as the credits rolled I got an intense urge to go out the front door and start running. Honey and Clover achieved that same feeling times ten. Just to go out the door, hop on my bike and pedal. No direction, no purpose. Just to see how far I could go. I didn’t, in case you were wondering. I hadn’t got my bike repaired after I got knocked down by that van. Plus it was raining. It’s always bloody raining in Ireland. There’s a big difference between cycling in Japan and Ireland I’ll have you know.
.
ExecutiveOtaku: The scene at the hospital when Mayama finds Rika, talks to her, and then gives her a ride home as a pretext to talk to her about their relationship and tries to move things forward. The scene where ‘Yoru wo Kakera’ plays during episode 15 of the first season. While I’ve already covered it in my Defining Moments in Being a Fan post (it’s my top moment), I’ll try and take a little bit different approach to explaining why it’s my favorite. It has great visuals, excellent use of music, and is an important point in their relationship. I have written about these before, but the true force of the scene to me was that I could feel both the emotions of the characters and the change in the direction of their relationship like the surge of a wave. As I watched the scene, I saw a relationship that had seemed deadlocked suddenly built momentum again and Mayama’s unexpected risk-taking paying off in a big way. It’s another example of the determination that I loved about Mayama, even if he’s not always the smoothest. And seeing Rika being affected by such a straightforward attempt to reach her through the guilt she felt towards both Harada and Mayama was truly profound.

Analysis

-Story
vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h13m00s112

Scamp: Eh, H&C is slice of life so talking about story is a bit redundant. I will say this though: the Yamada/Mayama/Nomiya/Rika story dragged on waaay too long. I didn’t really notice it by the end of the first season because I was too busy adoring the bike trip and reveling in the presense of Morita once again. But the start of the second season is where I really got sick of them, which is just another reason why the second season sucked. Mwahaha, go my biased views, go!
.
ExecutiveOtaku: I disagree with my colleague on story in slice of life being redundant. Life moves and changes constantly, and Honey and Clover reflected this with the progression that constantly went on even during the ordinary days that the characters experienced. If it was all just random ordinary days or entirely a drama the series would not be what it is. The progression was great, and the resolution in the second season gave us the realistic mixed bag of some things working out, some not, and the reminder to treasure them either way.
.
-Visuals
vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h28m55s197

Scamp: I usually think of Josei series in my head as ‘older shojo’ and group the two together (or alternatively ’shojo series I actually like’. This and Nodame are the only shojo series I’ve ever properly enjoyed). Not only do they act similar, the animation style is very similar. Sparkles, flowers and SD facial expressions are the order of the day. I can’t really praise or criticise it though, it did it’s job just fine. No more, no less.
.
ExecutiveOtaku:The artistry of the visuals in Honey and Clover is among my favorites in both anime and live action. The drawing style was mostly realistic but utilized various effects such as watercolor-like backgrounds, vivid recolors, and complete black or white backgrounds with just an object or a character to put the visuals in service to the emotions being expressed. Angles were often used effectively as well, such as the slanted, shaking angle when Mayama ran after Rika at the hospital, the moonlight cast down on Yamada as she drank and cried during the ‘Tamagawa’ scene, and the ferris wheel interior scenes. And rounding it out on less serious fronts were good use of chibi faces and comedic background changes/reaction shots.
.
-Music
vlcsnap-2009-11-13-15h27m37s138

Scamp: This is a hard part to review thanks to those bloody fansubbers. The music in H&C is excellent, I can certainly grant it that much. But when the fansubbers provide you with karaoke for every single fucking insert song that ever appears (and trust me, there’s at least one insert song with lyrics per episode) I started wishing the show would stop the insert music. My favourite songs were always the lyric-less ones.
.
ExecutiveOtaku:: The music really made many scenes for me and was the best use of insert songs that I’ve ever seen (my referring to certain scenes as the ‘[song name] scene’ may have given that away, heh.)  Now every time I hear them I recall those events and remember my love for the series. I even made sure to listen to ‘Tamagawa’ on the shore of the Tamagawa River one night when I was on study abroad BECAUSE I’M A HUGE NERD.

Scamp: I HATE DORAMA
vlcsnap-2009-11-21-20h53m10s66

I assume by now you can see that I really did not like the second season, more specifically the drama. However it wasn’t until discussing this series, and eventually other series, with EO did I realise exactly the extent of how much I hate human drama in my anime. In PlanetES, EO preferred the drama and imagery while I liked the ’slice-of-life in space’ aspect of the series. Full Metal Panic is yet another example of a series where I hated the second series, this time because it killed the fun that the first series and FUMOFFU had in bucketloads. Looking down through my favourite series on MAL there’s only two anime that focused primarilly on human drama that I’ve rated highly, Grave of the Fireflies and Welcome to the NHK. Funnily enough, I wouldn’t class either of these series as something I enjoyed. Rather, I appreciated what their messages were. Basically, I HATE DORAMA.
.
ExecutiveOtaku: Miwako is Mai Waifu

grab00000
Oh Miwako, you acting older than you are, Mayama and Nomiya teasing, Rika idolizing, massage chair sitting, Yamazaki embarrassment scheming, heavy lifting, 60-40 hair styled, outdated reference making, mischievous office lady, let me count the ways I love thee! I enjoyed every minute that this wonderful supporting character had in the series. Her demeanor, sense of humor, commentary, and genuine support for the characters she interacted with (even if they were embarrassed by it) made her a standout supporting character to me.

Conclusion

vlcsnap-2009-11-20-17h40m10s33

Scamp: Insanely realistic and so easy to connect with, Honey and Clover is the perfect series at portraying the growth from adolescence through to adulthood. At least, the first season is…

ExecutiveOtakuThere has been no other series that I’ve watched that has so completely captured the real emotions and experiences of this period in life. It will be something that I’ll be looking back on and recommending to people for years to come.

Millionaires trade Blackberries2 for water in slums

MUMBAI — Trading their Blackberries for scrubbing brushes and their mansions for huts, a group of wealthy youth are gluing Indians to their TV screens in a country struggling to bridge the gap between poverty and prosperity.

Sunny Sara, 28, a nightclub owner in Mumbai, was one of the participants in a new and popular reality TV show called “The Big Switch” which involves rich contestants residing in a slum for one month to help slum dwellers.

“There was no running water, no air conditioning, none of the amenities I was used to. I missed my Blackberry and my bikes,” Sara said. “It was a life-changing experience.”

More than a third of India’s population survives on less than one dollar a day, according to a 2007 United Nations report, while the number of dollar millionaires rose almost 23% in the same year, the fastest pace in the world.

The show went on air late last month, almost a year after Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” showed the world what it was like to be poor in Mumbai, where more than half its 18 million residents live in slums or on the streets.

“Most of India’s television audience is in the middle class,” said Zarina Mehta of UTV Bindass, which airs The Big Switch.

“When you bring in people from the richest strata and put them with the poorest of the poor, it makes for great television,” Mehta added.

“Our show is also about hope and the fact that you can work your way out of that poverty.”

The show involves 10 rich contestants paired with 10 slum dwellers. The groups have to work on tasks such as shining shoes at railway stations and selling wares at traffic signals, jobs the poor often have to do.

Points are given for each task and the onus is on the rich contestants to win the cash prize of 1 million rupees ($21,600), which would go toward fulfilling the dreams of their partner.

The show, which ends in the last week of January, was shot in a slum in Mumbai’s suburbs where fishermen live, and contestants, who also included an actor and a former Miss India, had to live in a one-room hut with their partner.

Sara’s partner on the show is Abhishek Kushwah, a 22-year-old who grew up in Dharavi,
Asia’s biggest slum.

“Me and Sunny are similar in our thinking, but we come from such different backgrounds,” Kushwah said.

“Yet, he did all he could to help me toward my goal of going to catering school. This show could be my ticket to a good life.”

For Sara, there were some experiences that were not so good.

“The smell of rotting fish was unbearable. There was a lot of filth and dirt,” he said.

Reality TV and game shows have proved to be huge hits with Indian audiences. From Indian versions of “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire” to “American Idol” and “Big Brother,” they all air on primetime.

Rafael Rosell – a psycho, a devil, a drug addict
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Rafael Rosell

MANILA, Philippines – Rafael Rosell has three dream roles on his wish list as an actor. They are that of a psycho, a devil and a drug addict. The hunky Rafael has already played the evil incarnate but has yet to portray a psycho.

Now, he can tick off the words “drug addict” from the list. Rafael plays a drug pusher — the title role no less in the indie Tulak. And he can’t wait to see the film, about the harmful effects of drugs, open on the big screen after it premieres tomorrow, Nov. 21, 7 p.m. at SM Megamall Cinema 12.

“It’s my hardest role so far,” says Rafael, a tinge of pride in his voice. As Tikboy, a man who grew up in an alley teeming with criminals and drug dependents, Rafael stepped into the shoes of someone he was never tempted to be: A drug addict.

The adrenaline rush of entering a world he has never known before pushed Rafael to research like he has never done before.

“The fact that my director (Neal “Buboy” Tan) believed in me is enough to inspire me,” Rafael relates. It doesn’t bother the Urian Best Supporting Actor (for Rome & Juliet) that his first starring role after seven years in the business is not in a mainstream film.

The result is a performance Rafael proudly described as something he did, not so much for others, but for himself. The Fil-Norwegian actor admits he accepts commercial projects to survive. But he makes sure he balances them with films that feed his hunger for the offbeat, the road not taken. These are the roles that bring a smile on his face.

So he works almost non-stop, even at a time when projects are said to come few and far-between for more of his colleagues. He has even turned down offers his tight schedule can’t allow.

“I tape Precious Hearts Romances — Midnight Phantom for ABS-CBN on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are for another series. I did Tulak in-between,” Rafael relates.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) chief Tito Sotto liked what he saw.

“Tulak is very timely,” he told the press. “It showed what we want to emphasize: Information, education and awareness of the disease and recovery and support programs available.”

Some people are even suggesting that Sotto’s office tour the advocacy film in school campuses where young people can see and learn from it.

Tulak may not wipe out the drug menace in one fell swoop. It is too much to expect and to demand. But if it can save a few young lives, it would have served its purpose. Then, Sotto, direk Buboy, Rafael, Julio Diaz, Maria Isabel Lopez, Mon Confiado, Ynez Veneracion and the rest of the cast and crew’s efforts would not be in vain.

Handsome Japanese killer attracts women for support
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Tatsuya Ichihashi3

Tatsuya Ichihashi33

Tatsuya Ichihashi, the man suspected of killing the British teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker, has become a bizarre object of admiration among a number of online communities of Japanese women.

Posting on social networking sites such as Mixi and 2Channel, some have even taken to referring to Ichihashi as The Fugitive Prince or Lord Ichi. Others have claimed that he could not possibly have committed the crime because he looks so kind.

“When he was arrested, I thought his disheveled black hair and the line from his neck to his jaw made him look so attractive,” one anonymous poster wrote. Others have commented on his lean physique and “bravery” in the face of police questioning into the brutal killing of Miss Hawker in 2007.

After Ichihashi’s parents revealed that their son had been upset when the family dog died shortly before Miss Hawker’s killing, some bloggers have commented on how sweet and caring they imagine he is.
Tatsuya Ichihashi1
One woman has even visited Gyotoku Police Station, where 30-year-old Ichihashi is being questioned, with a scrap book of photos of dogs.

Aya Matsumoto, a clinical psychologist, said: “It was a very cruel crime, but it seems that people here are treating it almost as if it were entertainment. It seems to me that anyone who appears on television here in Japan is immediately elevated to some sort of star and these people are unable or unwilling to associate Ichihashi with Miss Hawker’s death.

“I would imagine that a lot of these women who are posting consider Ichihashi to be a helpless young boy and have fallen in love with that image. They almost have a mothering instinct and a need to care for him.”

Police on Tuesday refused to comment on the number of letters or gifts that have been delivered to the station for Ichihashi, but did confirm that the suspect is still refusing to answer questions about the case and will not eat.

A doctor has examined Ichihashi, who has not eaten since he was arrested in Osaka on Nov 10. He had been on the run since evading police investigating Miss Hawker’s death in March 2007. Her body was later found buried in sand in a bath tub on the balcony of Ichihashi’s apartment in west Tokyo. Tatsuya Ichihashi5

  Blind Japanese pianist wowed crowd
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Click here to view the embedded video.

As Nobuyuki Tsujii finished the last note of Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante by Chopin, the packed audience in Tokyo’s Kioi Hall broke into an emotional applause. Executing each piece with energy and concentration, the 21-year-old classical pianist, who has been blind since birth, mesmerized the typically reserved Tokyo crowd in a two-hour solo performance on his latest tour. Kumi Araki, a 25-year-old from downtown Toyko, gushed. “I am so moved. Before I knew it, I was standing to applaud!” she says, wiping at tears.

Backstage, Tsujii’s fans surrounded him to congratulate another great performance. Dramatically different from his stage persona, the soft-spoken and laid-back musician says, “Everywhere I go on this tour, people’s reaction is amazing.” After Tsujii won the Gold Medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, in June, the young performer has been launched into the unfamiliar world of Japanese mega-stardom. The sales of his first album debut, together with his second album and a live DVD, have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and the interview requests flooded in. Tsujii, the first Japanese winner of the competition, says he rarely has time to go to his school now, or to meet friends. “The medal is a bit of a burden,” he admits, “But I enjoy playing in front of people, so I try to give a good performance every time.”

Japan, it seems, has got itself a case of Nobu Fever, the latest object of affection in a culture that regularly gets obsessed en masse with everything from fad diets to Haruki Murakami’s latest book. And while this kind of fame may be new for the artist, life as a concert pianist is not. Tsujii’s talent for music was discovered by his mother, when, at eight months, she says he repeatedly urged her to play a CD of Chopin’s Polonaise Op.53. Soon after, his parents gave him a toy piano, and he started lessons before he was two. At 10, he debuted on stage with a professional orchestra. Masahiro Kawakami, who taught Tsujii for 12 years, is amazed at his pupil’s unstoppable charisma. “He has a strong desire to strike a beautiful note, and this conviction that things will go well. His music has a power to make people happy.”

By day, Tsujii is a junior at Ueno Gakuen University, a music school in Tokyo. The round-faced, stout Tokyoite — he says he takes after his dad, except for the fingers — likes karaoke and swimming, and would like to find a nice girlfriend soon. Pretty ordinary stuff for a college student, but once Tsujii sits in front of a piano, he transforms. Classical music critic Yukiko Hagiya calls his sound “pure and crystal-clear. It communicates his joy of performing to an audience.” Michel Beroff, one of the jurors for the Cliburn Competition told the monthly piano magazine Chopin, “The special thing about his performance is his sound. It has depth, color and contrast, the genuine music.”

Certainly, being blind hasn’t made it easy. Tsujii can use Braille music scores to learn new pieces, but this kind of translation is usually done by volunteers. Because demand is so low, the variety of scores available does not meet the needs of a professional performer, so Tsujii has devised his own method. A team of pianists records scores along with specific codes and instructions written by composers, which Tsujii listens to and practices until he learns and perfects each piece. Yukio Yokoyama, Tsujii’s current professor says, “Usually people learn by observing how others use their fingers, their bodies and their breaths, but he can only touch and feel.”

Tsujii hopes one day to shake the label of being Japan’s “blind” pianist. “When I was small, I realized I was blind, but at the same time I said, ‘But I can play the piano, so it’s okay.’ I’d like everyone to think that I am simply a pianist.” He’ll have his chance: As the winner of the Cliburn Competition, he is booked to perform worldwide for the next three years. “I am only at the starting line,” he says. “I’d like to become a fine musician and play the piano as long as l live.”

Top Korean model found dead 1

A top South Korean model who was a fixture at fashion week in Paris and London was found dead at her apartment in Paris, an official said Friday.

Daul Kim, 20, was found dead Thursday by French police, a Foreign Ministry official in Seoul said.

The official declined to provide further details and asked not to be named, citing ministry policy. Media reports called it an apparent suicide, but officials have not confirmed the cause of death.

Her Seoul agency, Esteem, said her family and agency officials were heading to Paris.

Raised in Seoul and Singapore, Kim modeled in Asia before making her fashion week debut in Paris in 2007, modeling for Chanel, Dries van Noten and Maison Martin Margiela, among others, her agency said.

She became a fashion week regular in New York, Milan, Paris and London and most recently appeared during Seoul fashion week in October, according to Esteem.

Known for her thick mane of hair – sometimes dyed blond – and her quirky sensibility, 178cm model was celebrated for her sense of style.

She was featured recently in a commercial for designer Christopher Kane’s line of clothing for British retailer Topshop.

Kim also was an accomplished painter and video filmmaker who had a solo show of her artwork in Seoul. She often listed “collecting forks” as a hobby.

Bloggers in South Korea mourned her death, speculating that she felt the pressure of high-fashion modeling and a loss of identity.

In an Oct. 30 entry on her blog, Kim wrote that she was “mad depressed and overworked,” and in another entry said “the more i gain the more lonely it is … i know i’m like a ghost.”

The last entry on her blog, dated Nov. 18, was titled “say hi to forever” and carried a video of the song “I Go Deep” by British singer Jim Rivers.

South Korea – which has the highest suicide rate among the 30 nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – has had a string of high-profile suicides over the past year.

Former President Roh Moo-hyun jumped to his death in May while embroiled in a widening corruption scandal, and the ex-chairman of South Korea’s oldest conglomerate killed himself earlier this month.

In 2008, top actress Choi Jin-sil committed suicide, following in the footsteps of a fellow actor.

A young actress in one of South Korea’s popular soap operas also died by suicide.

Ebizo and Mao to be engaged
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Ebizo and Mao to be engaged

Playboy kabuki star Ichikawa Ebizo (31) is on the verge of finally settling down. He and freelance newscaster Kobayashi Mao (27) spoke yesterday for the first time about their relationship and said they plan to get engaged in the near future. Ichikawa spoke to reporters in front of his home in Tokyo shortly before 11pm last night. “When I first met her last December I had a feeling this would be the person I would be with.” He said he proposed at the end of June, adding “I will love her forever.” Renowned as a playboy after relationships with such actresses as Yonekura Ryoko (34), Sato Eriko (27) and Takaoka Saki (36), he refused to be taunted when a reporter asked, “Is it time to pay the piper?” He replied by saying simply, “She’s a wonderful person, so I guess it is.”

Meanwhile Kobayashi was the one who started the media buzzing with a brief mention at a PR event yesterday afternoon, before making a formal announcement on the TBS “News Zero” show last night. She first met Ichikawa while interviewing him for the show on the subject of “an encounter that changed your life.” An ardent kabuki fan, she watched Ichikawa perform every night for a week after that interview and is a regular visitor to the Kabukiza theater in Tokyo. The speed of the marriage plans has caused the usual speculation as to whether Kobayashi is pregnant but it’s been reported that she’s not. Ichikawa’s father, Danjuro XII (who previously performed under the Ebizo stage name), is performing this month and both father and son have performances scheduled for January, so a formal engagement is likely to be held in December.

Ichikawa, formally Ebizo XI, is one of the “princes” of kabuki, coming from a long theatrical lineage. Together with other handsome young stars such as Nakamura Shido, he has helped keep kabuki popular with younger audiences. They regularly appear in movies and TV dramas – Ichikawa played the lead in NHK’s yearlong taiga drama series “Musashi” in 2003. And their off-stage antics have helped keep them in the gossip columns.

Kobayashi, on the recommendation of her older sister Maya (30), also a freelance TV announcer, first made a name for herself on the Sanma-hosted NTV variety show “Koi no Karasawagi” while a student at Sophia University. She became a weather reporter for Fuji TV in 2003 and the following year had a part in a late-night drama. From 2005 she started appearing regularly in dramas on several networks. She joined the News Zero team when the show was launched in October 2006

  Tavia Yeung works really hard
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Tavia Yeung is a filial daughter4

Tavia Yeung is a different TVB Fa Dan. In 1999, she entered this industry through acting training class and worked for 10 years until now. However, Tavia who produces at least 3 to 4 series per year and always appears on tv and magazines still loses out to [Gossips Ms HK] Kate Tsui who entered this field later than her and even Vivian Yeo who does not have much series but circulated by rumours with the male artistes.

“Actually I do not like to do interviews. I don’t know how to talk and afraid that I talk wrongly as I do not want to offend anyone. I rather film series overnight than to shoot photos and answer questions….” However, Tavia reached punctually today and concentrated on shooting photos. Only when the interview session reached, I saw that she spent efforts in thinking answers and kept on looking at the watch. “Actually, it is easier for me to do photo shooting now. I know how to stick tape when I wear revealing garments. I remember when I filmed slimming commercial for the first time, I used tape to stick around the bra. At the end, when I peeled off the tape, my skin was peeled off at the same time. It was so painful at that time. That time I was thinking, why did I have to shoot this?” Yes. That time Tavia Yeung did not take short cut, never entered beauty pageant and entered training class instead. The reason was she did not want to wear swimming suit and stood in front of peoples.

“However, the happiest thing is I can tell my mother [You don’t have to work. I can support your life!] Tavia Yeung, being in this field, just wants to be filial towards her mother and protect her mother’s life.

Regarding the Best Actress Awards in TVB Anniversary Awards this year, everyone adds marks for Tavia Yeung’s performance in Beyond The Realm Of Conscience. Unscrupulous and selfish character is not created especially for her but is her great acting skills. It is the endurance and compromise that she learnt from this field.

Big trouble if audiences are not satisfied
The news regarding the fighting for Best Actress will appear every day. Tavia Yeung who is down to earth all these while, is regarded as hot favourite and is chosen by high management as she is [biological contracted daughter]! No matter Tavia accepted interview in front of tv or talked to me today, she couldn’t cover up her happiness but there were struggling in her speaking tone. After all, she entered this field for 10 years and had seen all sorts of happenings and attitudes. Seeing that Sheren Tang went back with empty hand although being nominated for many years, a lot of audiences will feel not worthy for her. However when Gigi Lai received Best Actress Award, she was criticized by peoples. No wonder the Tavia Yeung today is fearful in her every steps. “About the fighting for Best Actress Award, I do not feel especially nervous. However, I feel very nervous regarding my performance in the series! Every day I will go home and ask my mother how is my performance inside the series? However, I’m her daughter. Of course she will say good so I think it will be better to ask my friends.”

“During the filming, the pressures were high. I kept on eat to reduce pressure and I turned fat after that! Luckily the ancient costumes were looser and I immediately started to lose weight after finished filming. I admit that I’m afraid that my performance is not good enough and awards are not so important for me instead. Of course, I want to win but what if the audiences are not satisfied with it? I’m not praising other peoples and look down on myself. I can act but I need time to grasp. I hope that after my first step, I can walk even further in my second step. Steady and stable towards success. I have the same thinking when I entered this field last time.“
Sexiness from brain washing

Talked about her background, Tavia Yeung is similar to other artistes and grew up in housing estate and entered this field by chance. She stayed in Shatin Village when she was still small. Her father passed away when she was 2 years old. Her mother re-married when she was 7 years old. Her stepfather has a daughter of his own. Added with her biological sister Griselda Yeung, five of them got along with each other well. In 2005, her step father was seriously ill. Tavia Yeung who was filming in China took a few days leave to go back Hong Kong to meet her step father for the last time.
Tavia Yeung is a filial daughter3
Her background story is not as pitiful as expected but is ordinary instead. She expressed that she did not have the talent of performing since small and did not enter any singing competition before. During acting competition, the most she did was shooting photos and dreamt of becoming a model but using the most old-fashioned story. Tavia accompanied her friend to register for acting training class and at the end, she entered TVB until today.

“After I entered this industry, I found out that other than filming series, I need to shoot photo and do interview! At first I didn’t really know how to make pose and not used to wearing sexy garments. I remember that my manager told me once [You don’t want to wear sleeveless shirt and short skirt. You expect the magazines and newspapers company to borrow what type of clothes for you?] That time, I told her if that was the case, I could skip the shooting! Maybe because I still had baby fat at that time and lacked of confidence. Until a few years back, when I filmed Dicey Business and needed to portray a girl with big chest. I needed to throw out all my own personalities and learnt to seduce peoples with my eyes and body. That time the producer told me that I must get used to peoples staring at my chest and then only I could act naturally!”

“Therefore, I kept on brain wash myself. I also tanned my body. The feelings were like a layer and protective coloration added to me. Slowly, I could accept my new healthy sexy image. First time wore Deep V gown on stage and everyone was indeed surprised over it. There were more cameras shooting my photos.”

In 1999, Tavia Yeung just entered this industry and not long after that, she took part in Steven Ma and band group, ZEN’s MV as female lead. That time she was just 20 years old and appeared fresh and pure. The secondary school girl image suited her well.

During TVB Anniversary 2005, Tavia Yeung who rejected sexiness all these while at last made up her mind to buy the low chest gown. After she wore the gown, the camera lights flashed non-stop and everyone found out that she actually had nice body figure too.

During the TVB Lighting Ceremony in the past 2 years, [biological daughter] Tavia Yeung were only standing at the 2nd or 3rd row. This year, due to the popularity of [Beyond], Tavia Yeung was promoted heavily and stood at the front row and near to Uncle Six.

Why earn this money?
A person needs courage to open up their own mind. Maybe it is excitement. Being in entertainment circles, she saw those that entered this field around the same time as her like Myolie Wu and Bernice Liu that used Ah Jie and sexiness to gain position and high exposures, acted in one series after another, and bought cars and houses. As for Yeung’s 2 sisters, her sister Griselda Yeung entered this field through beauty pageant but her developments were average. Her sister, Tavia Yeung worked hard and willing to suffer and at least settled at second line Fa Dan. If they want to give a comfortable life for their family, the responsibility will definitely drops on Tavia’s shoulder.

Because of that, Tavia Yeung who did not want to wear swimming suit to enter beauty pageant, finally overcame her mind barrier in the past few years and filmed sexy slimming commercial to earn real money. Of course she needed to suffer in the process.

“Now I know how to separate the tapes to stick. But the first time when I filmed slimming commercial, I was afraid of exposing myself. I wrapped the tapes around my chest. After I filmed 10 hours for the commercial, I rushed to film The Academy. When I finished work and returned home, I found out the tape was sticky towards my skin and the wound was red and swollen. There were blisters too. It was very painful that time. That part really contained tears of blood. All these while, I’m someone that only likes filming and rather jumps down from the cliff than to appear sexy. Therefore, I kept on ask myself why I had to film that? Why I had to earn that money? The wound on my chest left a scar there and I used up almost a few years for the scar to be removed completely. Slowly after that, I’ve figured it out. Since everyone likes to see sexy photos, then moderate sexiness is still acceptable for me.”

I’m not lucky
Using a few years time and overcame the barrier to appear sexy, her efforts turned into an apartment unit at Tseung Kwan O. She finally could give her mother a comfortable life. Her next target is to change a bigger house so that her family can stay more comfortably. However, Tavia expressed that it is not easy to earn money using her own efforts. “All these while, I do not know how to mix in a group. Actually, I feel that Ms Catherine Tsang and Ms Virginia Lok treat me very well. They gave me a lot of chances. But I’m a boring person. Sometimes when a group of peoples having dinner with Ms Lok, I will feel shy, uneasy and suddenly become quiet! This is because I’m afraid that I’m not careful and talk too loud or play too crazily! If the reporters see that, I’m afraid that they will write me like as if I’m fighting for something? Moreover, I grew up in housing estate. I like to eat at food stalls and like to feel relaxed during eating.

“I remember there is an actor told me before, [Actually it doesn’t matter. When you have time, try to take a stroll outside producer’s room. If they have stories to film, they will find you!] However, I did not try before as I was too scared! There was only one time when I needed to bring some documents to office and passed by producer’s room but there was no one inside there. How unlucky I am! I know my own abilities. From small until now, I have no fate on that. Before this, all the casts of [Beyond] had dinner together and there was a lucky draw session. Ah Sheh and Mary Hon sat beside me. Both of them won the lucky draw and only I alone that did not win anything. Therefore, I know that I need to depend on myself to get anything that I want. Like this is better as I can have clear conscience of myself….”

Her sister, Griselda Yeung chose a short cut, beauty pageant to enter this field. Now, she is married to King Of Lightbox and has a half year old daughter. Tavia Yeung who is career minded, admitted that she envies her sister but she chooses to work hard in her job and slowly continues to walk. She will leaves to fate regarding love relationship.Tavia Yeung is a filial daughter

This year, Tavia Yeung is 30 years old.
She expressed that she thought of getting married before 30 years old. Now she will not use age to tie herself up. According to her hairstyle, he found out that she has a few strand of white hairs and suggested that she used some times to dye it. Tavia did not mind at all and expressed that she was too busy with her job and will do it next time.

If other actresses, I think they will cry out in fears and ask the hairstylist to help them to cure it. No wonder Tavia Yeung said that the male artistes treat her like buddy and always tap each other’s shoulders. Before this, there were rumours circulated her rumoured rich boyfriend, Lam Wai Kit that he had financial problems and Tavia Yeung still supports him and never leaves him. “We are good friends all these while. But if you ask me, if my boyfriend has problems, will I help him? If it is within my ability, of course I will help. But I will ask him to write a receipt for loan. I think if he is not too bad, after he goes through the difficulties, maybe I can get 1 million if I borrow a hundred thousand!”

Is it have to count like this? “However, [Beyond] taught me the definition of honeyed and hypocritical words. It is hard to fathom a person’s mind and many people will just chooses benefits over morality….. It will be better to play safe.”

Tavia Yeung is faithful and dated rich boyfriend, Lam Wai Kit for a few years. Although he was rumoured that he had financial problems and had other girlfriends, their “good friends” relationship still remain unchanged.

Tammy Chen nervous about more bed scenes

Tammy Chen nervous about more hot bed scenes1

SETTV drama produced by Wang Pei Hua has finally began filming (the second time) on the 18th, after being through much troubles. The male and female lead Wang You Sheng and Tammy Chen Yi Rong showed up in their wedding outfits and the main cast had full attendance. Faced with numerous bed scenes in the drama, Tammy expressed her nervousness “I was shocked by the numerous bed scenes in the script.” You Sheng promised her that “I’ll try to be careful.” though.

This drama was originally titled “Lucky Day” but the director got snatched away and the male lead quit. Thus, to change their luck, the title was changed to “Divorce March” which was criticized to be too old-fashion sounding. The television company thus started a poll and finalized the drama title as

“第二回合我愛你 (Second Round of I Love You)”

The SETTV drama which is produced by Wang Pei Hua finally held another filming opening ceremony on the 18th, with the director Wang Ming Tai and main cast Tammy Chen, Wang You Sheng, Chen Bo Zheng, Ke Shu Yuan, Ma Nian Xian, Song Xin Ni, Wang Jian Ming, Jiang Li Li, Lin Wei Li, Ma Li Ou etc all in full attendance.

As the story begins from the day that the male and female main leads decided to divorce and slowly progresses backwards, there are quite a few bed scenes involved for the married couple. This is causing quite a bit of stress for Tammy who only has experience with “touch and go” bed scene. She has even referenced Cheryl Yang and Ethan Ruan’s hot bed scene in “My Queen”. Tammy laughed and said “These scenes are just like what happens in reality, what you will do with your other partner but that’s why its hard to act. And You Sheng is a newcomer who has no experience with bed scenes. I don’t know how I will be doing this with him; I’m the female party so I shouldn’t be taking the lead too much.” The stress is obviously larger for You Sheng who is being the male lead for the first time but he still comforted Tammy very manly, saying “Don’t worry! I’ll take initiative but I’ll be careful too.”

Tammy started her career from “Lavender” and is now returning to film SETTV and TTV’s drama. She feels that her mood is brought back to the stage when she first started and she hopes that she’ll give everyone a new feeling this time round.

Jericho Rosales, sexy with clothes on
Posted by: Lady-Princess - Nov-21-2009 01:11 PM - No Replies

Jericho ROsales1

Jericho Rosales, one of the hunk dramatic actors of his generation, declares he doesn’t need to take off clothes so just to be called “sexy.” This, he proved in the latest collection of Walker Underwear, where he happened to be its longtime endorser.

Jericho, or Echo as he is fondly called, recently renewed his ties with Walker. It has been last 2000 when Walker first got him as endorser.

At the recent launch of Grafitti at Annabel’s Morato, Echo took part in a photo shoot to capture the essence of the new collection. He was made to look ruggedly handsome like James Dean, showing just a little skin but appearing very sexy just the same.

On showing a little bit of skin, Echo stressed, “Di ko kailangan maghubad para maging sexy. I believe I don’t have to take off clothes to endorse anything. I preserve things with myself. Pag sa work like soap opera, if needed, okay lang. Whatever I endorse, it has to go with my image as an artist.”

He added, “Good thing with Walker is they respect my ideas. I’m very concerned with my audience.”

Being in the business for 55 years already, the Walker management announced that this 2009-2010, they will be venturing into fashion. Echo strongly suggests his styles, as seen in his photo shoots. The most interesting part is Echo strongly patronizes his endorsements, showing the press people that same event that he is wearing the brand.

No more second chance for Echo-Tin?

Pairing Echo again with former flame Kristine Hermosa is something that Echo is thankful for. He said, “Very thankful ako na nakatrabaho [ko] uli si Tin dahil naaayos namin ang mga di [namin] naayos noon.”

With the positive comments they are getting because of their seemingly “real life” portrayal of husband and wife, Echo reacted, “Hindi…ramdam na ramdam lang talaga ['yong character]. Alam niyo naman kami ni Tin medyo metikuluso kaming dalawa. Nasa script talaga yung mga kisses…at kinasal na kasi kami sa story kaya ganun [ka-sweet].”

Asked if he and Tin are close to real life lovers, he answered, “’Yon nga ang iniingatan namin e, ‘yong mauwi sa totohanan. Siyempre trabaho ‘yon e.”

Echo made a deal with himself with regard to second chances. “Let’s just put it this way, I made a promise to myself na kapag leading lady ko e medyo ‘trabaho tayo.’ Saka naging kami [ni Tin] e. Meron [lang] talaga kaming comfortability level na mahirap basagin,” he said.

Being in the set of “Dahil May Isang Ikaw,” Echo was also asked to comment on the issue involving co-stars Lorna Tolentino and Chin Chin Gutierrez. It was reported that the slapping scene of the two crossed borders and that Chin Chin hurt Lorna. He said, “Alam ko yung nangyari pero di ko napanuod yung nangyari. OK naman kami sa set. Wala kaming problema. Walang birian, walang angasan, walang pangit na pinapakita.”

On his Emmy nomination

In a recent interview with Carmen Soo, Echo’s leading lady in “Kahit May Isang Saglit,” which happened to be nominated in the 37th International Emmy Awards (Nov. 19 and 20 in New York), she said that Echo can’t go with her to grace the awards night. “Yeah, may taping ako e. I prayed a lot, pero wala talaga e, di ako makakapunta e. Sayang, medyo mami-miss out ko yun. Ang prayer ko na lang sana manalo kami. Na-nominate na kami e. So I pray that Carmen will have a good time. Sina Tita Malou [Santos] at Angel [Locsin] pupunta sila. Ako, I can’t kasi madami kaming taping. I would love to go. Broken hearted ako ng konti dahil hindi ako makakasama,” Echo shared.

He added, “I believe that opening na ito. It’s time that Filipino shows are doing well dito sa atin. Really, the world is the stage now. Magandang senyales yan na nakikilala na tayo sa ibang bansa.”

At present, Echo claims to be single, choosing instead to focus more on his career as an actor and as a singer. He has just released his latest album titled “Change.” Echo also indulges himself into sports like surfing, skateboarding and boxing.
